This Holiday Season

As Christmas approaches, we are looking ahead to two vital moments for the children at Jemo House: celebrating the holiday season with joy and preparing for the brand-new Kenyan school year starting in January.

Through your generous support, you can help us create an unforgettable holiday season and set our children up for success in the classroom. Whether you send a Christmas care package, purchase items directly from our wishlists, or sponsor a child’s education, your gift brings tangible hope and joy to Jemo House.

Christmas Magic At Jemo House

In Kenya, children typically do not get individual Christmas presents, they receive a new set of clothes.

To bring a little extra magic to Christmas this season, we would love to provide shared gifts like card games, books, skipping ropes, and puzzles for all the children to enjoy together.

$15— A Set of New Clothes: The primary gift a child receives is a new outfit to wear. This is often the main personal item bought for them all year.

$20- A Christmas Gift: Such as a book, card game, jigsaw puzzle, or skipping rope—bringing hours of hands-on fun and shared play.

$50- Holiday Care Package: pajamas, a new towel, bed sheets & a puzzle or game along with Christmas candy.

Help ensure a child feels cherished, celebrated, and full of joy this holiday season!

Back To School Essentials

Whilst the Kenyan government subsidizes primary (elementary) education, it is not entirely free. Each student is required to wear a school uniform and backpack with basic writing materials and text books. Crucially, the local school and many families cannot afford necessary textbooks. As a result, every textbook TLC provides is often shared by three students during the school day. Furthermore, the children are required to bring their own toilet tissue, highlighting the school's inability to provide even this basic necessity.

Each day the children walk to and from school along dirt and gravel roads, crossing a small creek along the way. However, after heavy rains, the unpaved roads transform into deep mud. On those challenging days, they must pay to ride in a public transport minibus to reach school.

It costs $100 per month to cover the school fees for all our primary-aged children. Additionally, providing each child with a school uniform, books, backpacks, and stationery like pens and pencils incurs a further $100 per month. This means that getting our younger students into the classroom and equipped for learning comes to $20 each month per child.

Off To Boarding School!

Starting secondary school, the equivalent of high school in Kenya, is a significant milestone for our Grade 9 youngsters, but it comes with a substantial list of required items before their first term begins. Each student needs to bring their own mattress, pillow, and sheets, along with essentials like a mosquito net, flashlight, and toiletries. Beyond that, they're responsible for all their own school books, supplies, and a backpack. A new school uniform, shoes, and shoe polish are also necessary. They even need to supply items like powdered milk, sugar, and toilet tissue. As well as a suitcase for clothing a large trunk needs to be provided for all these mandatory supplies.

The initial cost for each secondary school child's kit is around $400, with an additional $75 needed each term to replenish consumable supplies. This can be a considerable cost, making support crucial for these young people to access and succeed in their education.
